Information about Sam Barclay.


Dr Sam Barclay has been teaching English as a Foreign Language for 20 years.

He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). He specializes in second language acquisition with a particular focus on vocabulary learning and assessment, as well as course and materials design. He teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, and supervises PhD students.

Before joining NTU, Sam was a lecturer in EFL at Ehime University in Japan, where he developed curricula, materials, and testing programs. He has taught in universities, high schools, junior high schools, elementary schools, private language schools, and a Buddhist temple. He has worked in China, Europe, and North America, and has contributed to educational projects in Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the UCL Institute of Education.

His research focuses on the teaching, learning, and assessment of vocabulary in second or foreign languages, examining factors that influence the effectiveness of different teaching methodologies. He is actively involved in several professional organizations, sitting on the executive committee of the Vocabulary Special Interest Group of the British Association of Applied Linguistics.
